The convention used
Marla and kanal in Punjab and Chandigarh
- The revenue measure starts from the karam of 5.5 ft: 1 sq karam (sarsahi) = 30.25 sq ft, and 9 sarsahi = 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft.
- 20 marla = 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft (605 sq yd), and 8 kanal = 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft — exactly the acre, which is how the two systems meet.
- Some colony layouts and older records use a different marla, and in Chandigarh’s sectors “1 kanal” is also the name of a plot-size category. The area in sq ft or sq yd written on the deed or allotment letter is what counts.
- A bigha differs by region — between states, districts and even villages — so this converter does not assume one. Give the size used in your area, from the land record (jamabandi) or the patwari.
