Chandigarh Tricity Metro Status, October 2026: What Has Been Approved and What Has Not
Property1313 Team · October 19, 2026 · 8 min read

Few projects are talked about in Tricity property circles as much as the metro. This guide puts the Chandigarh Tricity Metro on one page as a dated record: what has been approved, what has not, what it is estimated to cost, and how you can check its status yourself. We do not guess at dates. Everything below comes from official statements as reported in the press, with the date of each report.
Quick answer: As of 30 October 2026, the Chandigarh Tricity Metro has in-principle approvals only. The Centre approved an 85.65-km, three-corridor network in principle in March 2023, but there is no final sanction with funding, a joint committee is still reviewing feasibility, and no construction had started as of March 2026.
Key points
- In-principle approval by the Centre: March 2023, for an 85.65-km network with three corridors.
- Cleared by Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana: July 2023, subject to a revised detailed plan from RITES.
- Underground in heritage sectors 1–30: in-principle approval by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, July 2024.
- Fresh feasibility review: a joint committee set up in November 2024. In June 2025 it asked RITES to revise its report again.
- Cost estimate (February 2025 prices, excluding land): ₹23,263 crore elevated, ₹27,680 crore underground.
- Not done: final sanction, funding agreement, final alignment and stations, tenders, construction.

What has been approved so far
In-principle approval of the network (March 2023)
This is the approval people quote most. It covers an 85.65-km network across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula with three corridors. "In principle" means the Centre agreed with the idea and the outline. It is not a sanction of money, and it does not fix the final route.
Clearance by the three governments (July 2023)
Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana cleared the proposal subject to a revised detailed plan from the consultant, RITES. This step mattered because the metro crosses three jurisdictions and needs all three to share costs.
Underground in the heritage sectors (July 2024)
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs gave in-principle approval to running the metro underground in Chandigarh's heritage sectors 1 to 30, The Tribune reported on 4 July 2024. A senior UT officer told the paper the minutes were still awaited. Going underground adds a large amount to the cost.
What has not been approved yet
- A final sanction with funding from the Union government. We found no such approval as of 30 October 2026.
- A final, agreed alignment with station locations.
- The financial model. The committee questioned RITES' ridership estimates, its fare assumptions (5% a year), its 3% annual traffic growth figure and the operating ratio (The Tribune, 17–18 June 2025).
- Tenders and construction. The Tribune reported on 23 March 2026 that no construction had begun.
Why it is taking so long
The record points to three reasons:
- Viability. The financial internal rate of return worked out by RITES is 5.26% for elevated corridors and 4% for underground ones (The Tribune, June 2025). Low returns make funding harder to agree.
- Cost. The estimate has grown from about ₹16,000 crore in early planning to around ₹25,000 crore (The Tribune, 23 March 2026).
- Heritage and digging. The UT Administrator raised concerns in January 2026 about excavating Chandigarh and about financial risk.
The cost estimates, side by side
| Option | Capital cost (Feb 2025 prices, excluding land) | Completion cost to 2031 (with taxes and escalation) |
|---|---|---|
| Three corridors, elevated | ₹23,263 crore | ₹25,631 crore |
| Three corridors, underground | ₹27,680 crore | ₹30,498 crore |

Where the corridors were planned to run
RITES' earlier Phase I work, as reported by The Tribune in December 2023, included a corridor from Rock Garden to ISBT Zirakpur via the airport. A later draft added 6.15 km, taking the network from 79.5 km to 85.65 km. Station names have not been fixed by any sanction, so we do not list them here.
Important: You will see maps online showing exact metro stations next to particular projects. No station list has been sanctioned. Treat such maps as drafts at best.

Reading metro news without being misled
Metro stories come round again and again, so a few habits help:
- Look for the verb. "Approved in principle", "cleared", "DPR finalised", "sanctioned" and "foundation stone laid" are different stages. Only a sanction with funding, followed by tenders, means work can start.
- Look for the date. Many articles shared in 2026 are about the March 2023 approval or the July 2024 heritage decision. They are true, but old.
- Look for the source. A statement by the Union Cabinet, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs or the Chandigarh Administration carries weight. A map on a brochure does not.
- Look for the money. The project's estimates run from ₹23,263 crore to ₹30,498 crore. Ask who has agreed to pay, and how much.
- Look for the length. Reports mention 79.5 km, 85.65 km and, in some summaries, over 100 km across two phases. The figure that was approved in principle in March 2023 is 85.65 km.
How to check the metro's status yourself
- Union Cabinet and ministry announcements on the Press Information Bureau (pib.gov.in). A real sanction of a metro project is announced there.
- The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (mohua.gov.in), which handles metro proposals.
- The Chandigarh Administration (chandigarh.gov.in) for UMTA and joint committee news.
- Dated newspaper reports. Note the date; metro stories from 2023 are often reshared as if they were new.
What this means for buyers: facts to check
We make no price claims about the metro, and we suggest you do not let anyone else's claims drive your decision either. Here is what to check instead:
- Whether a brochure's "metro nearby" line refers to a sanctioned project. As of 30 October 2026, none is sanctioned in the Tricity.
- Your commute on today's roads. Time the drive at rush hour from the project to your office or your children's school.
- The road projects that are actually open or being built. Our separate guides cover the PR-7 Airport Road and the projects along it.
- Bus access. Ask whether city or inter-city buses stop near the project today.
- The project itself: price, builder, RERA registration and paperwork. Start with how to check RERA registration in Punjab and the documents to check before buying.
Browse by area
If you are comparing areas, start with the city pages: property in Chandigarh, property in Mohali, property in Zirakpur, property in Panchkula and property in New Chandigarh. Our property map shows every listing by area, and Tricity property rates give the price levels by city.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Has the Chandigarh Tricity Metro been approved?
- Only in principle. The Centre gave in-principle approval to an 85.65-km, three-corridor network in March 2023, and Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana cleared it in July 2023 subject to a revised detailed plan. As of 30 October 2026 we found no report of a final sanction with funding, and no construction had started as of The Tribune's report of 23 March 2026.
- When will the Tricity Metro start?
- No start date has been announced. The project was sent back for a fresh feasibility review in November 2024, and in June 2025 the consultant RITES was asked to revise its scenario analysis report. We do not predict dates; check the latest official announcement.
- How much will the Tricity Metro cost?
- RITES' latest estimate at February 2025 prices, excluding land, is ₹23,263 crore for elevated corridors and ₹27,680 crore for underground ones. Including taxes and escalation to 2031, the figures are ₹25,631 crore and ₹30,498 crore, as reported by The Tribune.
- Will the metro be underground in Chandigarh?
- In July 2024 the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs gave in-principle approval to an underground metro in Chandigarh's heritage sectors 1 to 30, according to The Tribune of 4 July 2024. The final alignment has not been sanctioned.
- Which areas would the Tricity Metro cover?
- The plans studied so far cover Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, with Phase I including a corridor from Rock Garden to ISBT Zirakpur via the airport, as reported by The Tribune in December 2023. Routes and stations are not final until the project is sanctioned.
- Who decides on the Tricity Metro?
- The joint committee of Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana, set up in November 2024 as an extension of the Chandigarh Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority, is reviewing feasibility. Final funding would need the Union government's sanction.
- Should I buy a flat because a metro station is planned nearby?
- We would not base a purchase on an unsanctioned metro. Judge the home on the roads, transport and facilities that exist today, its price, the builder and its RERA record. If a metro comes later, that is a bonus, not a plan.
