Mohali Airport Road Status, Stretch by Stretch: PR-7, the PR-7 Spur and GMADA's Alternate Road (October 2026)

Living near the airport is one of the first things buyers in Mohali and Zirakpur ask about, and one of the most confusing, because "airport road" can mean three or four different roads at different stages. This guide takes each Mohali airport road in turn, stretch by stretch, and gives its status on a date you can check. It is about the roads themselves. For the housing and commercial projects along PR-7, see our separate PR-7 Airport Road projects guide.

Quick answer: As of 30 October 2026, PR-7 Airport Road is still the main road to Mohali airport. GMADA's alternate road from near Bawa White House is partly open (one side only, lights not working, The Tribune, 5 October 2026). The 10.3-km PR-7 Spur is awarded and its foundation stone was laid on 17 July 2026, but it is not built. Shorter routes from Chandigarh and Haryana are not approved.

Key points

  • PR-7, the 200-ft Airport Road, carries the airport traffic from both Punjab and Haryana.
  • GMADA's alternate road: one carriageway open from near Bawa White House to the airport flyover; the other side under construction (The Tribune, 5 October 2026).
  • PR-7 Spur (NH-205A): 10.3 km around Zirakpur, awarded on 27 March 2026, foundation stone on 17 July 2026.
  • Chandigarh's "shortest route" from Sectors 47–48: before the High Court as of July 2026.
  • Haryana's 100-ft road to the terminal: awaiting Ministry of Defence approval (May 2026).

The airport and its one main road

Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport opened on 11 November 2015. It is a joint venture of the Airports Authority of India, Punjab and Haryana. Since it opened, all airport traffic from every direction has used the main Airport Road on the Mohali side (The Tribune, 19 May 2026). That road is PR-7.

PR-7 Airport Road, stretch by stretch

The Tribune described the road built by GMADA as a 17.5-km Airport Road linking the Mohali–Kharar highway with the Zirakpur–Patiala highway (25 January 2018). It is a 200-ft road. Here is how it divides for a buyer:

StretchWhat is on itStatus and dated note
Mohali sectors (the western stretch)Junctions listed by The Tribune in 2020: Sohana, Sector 70, Phase 8B, Quark City, Sectors 66–67 and 78–79, IISEROpen. The same report (8 December 2020) counted over 10 accident black spots on this stretch
Airport Chowk and AerocityThe airport turn-off, Aerocity blocks and the alternate road's endOpen. The alternate road ends at the airport flyover
Zirakpur stretchFrom Aerocity to the Zirakpur–Patiala highway light point (NH-7)Open. The Zirakpur–Panchkula bypass is planned to start from NH-7 near this end
Extension towards New Chandigarh8,785 m, 200 ft, from New Sunny Enclave to PR-4 in New ChandigarhReported 87% done with an August 2023 deadline (The Tribune, 27 May 2023). We found no report confirming it opened

Tip: When a listing says "on PR-7" or "on Airport Road", ask which stretch. A home on the Zirakpur stretch and one near Sector 66 are very different drives to the same airport.

For the sector maps, see Sector 66, Sector 78 and Aerocity.

GMADA's alternate airport road: partly open

This road was built so that not all airport traffic has to use PR-7. Its dated history:

  • Earlier hearings: the Punjab Government told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that an 8.5-km, 50-metre-wide alternative road was under construction, targeted for the end of the year (as summarised by The Tribune, 29 May 2026).
  • 19 May 2026: The Tribune described the alternate road as running parallel to the main airport road from Bawa White House Crossing to Airport Crossing, 8.5 km long and about 90% complete.
  • 29 May 2026: GMADA's counsel told the High Court the route from Bawa White House to the airport was ready and would be operational by 31 May 2026. The route passes the Sectors 65–66 junction and continues towards Sector 66-B.
  • 5 October 2026: The Tribune reported that one side of the 4.5-km stretch from near Bawa White House in Phase XI to the airport flyover had opened to traffic after pressure from the High Court; the other side was still under construction; and the street lights, though installed, had never worked, so the road goes dark after 7 pm. GMADA officials said work to fix the lights was under way.

Note: the reports give different lengths, 8.5 km for the whole alternate road and 4.5 km for the stretch that opened. We give both as reported.

Important: If you drive it at night, expect an unlit road until GMADA confirms the lights work.

The PR-7 Spur: awarded, foundation stone laid

The PR-7 Spur is a 10.3-km, six-lane spur of the Ambala–Chandigarh greenfield highway (NH-205A) around Zirakpur. The Tribune reports:

  • Union government approval in February 2026 (26 May 2026 report).
  • Letter of award on 27 March 2026, with about 18 months to complete (same report).
  • Cost of ₹1,464 crore, and foundation stone laid by the Prime Minister on 17 July 2026 (18 July 2026 report).

The Press Information Bureau's release of July 2026 covers the same visit. The Tribune's May 2026 report describes the spur as linking the Zirakpur bypass with the Ambala–Chandigarh greenfield expressway near Rajo Majra. Its purpose is to let long-distance traffic avoid Zirakpur's built-up stretch. It does not change how you reach the airport today.

Shorter routes that are not approved

Chandigarh's "shortest route" from Sectors 47–48

A route from the Sectors 47–48 intersection in Chandigarh to the airport was listed for the High Court's hearing of 16 July 2026 (The Tribune, 29 May 2026). We found no report of a decision after that hearing.

Haryana's 100-ft road to the terminal

Haryana has proposed a 100-ft road from the Chandigarh entry point along the edge of defence land to the terminal. It needs 38 acres of Ministry of Defence land and a 450-metre underpass, and the Ministry's approval was still awaited as of 19 May 2026 (The Tribune). The same report gives the distance from Zirakpur to the airport as 13.7 km today and 9.6 km by the proposed road.

How the PR-7 Spur and the bypass fit together

The Zirakpur–Panchkula bypass is a separate 19.2-km road from the Zirakpur–Patiala junction on NH-7 to the Zirakpur–Parwanoo junction on NH-5. It was awarded on 27 March 2026 but has been held up in the High Court over trees since April 2026. Together with the spur, it is meant to take through traffic away from Zirakpur. Neither is open as of 30 October 2026.

What this means for buyers: facts to check

We make no price claims about any of these roads. Use them as facts to check:

  • Which stretch the home is on, and the drive to the airport from there at your usual hours.
  • Whether the alternate road helps you. It runs on the Mohali side from near Bawa White House; it does nothing yet for Zirakpur, Panchkula or Chandigarh.
  • Night driving. Until GMADA fixes the lights, the alternate road is unlit after dark.
  • Noise. Towers that face the 200-ft road, or sit under the flight path, get more noise. Visit in the evening and check the tower's position on the layout plan.
  • Accident black spots. The Tribune counted over 10 on the 17.5-km stretch in 2020. Look at how the project's entry meets the road.
  • The project itself: price, builder, RERA and paperwork. See how to check RERA registration in Punjab and our Airport Road Mohali guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which road goes to Mohali airport?
Since the airport opened in 2015, traffic from every direction has used the main Airport Road on the Mohali side, the 200-ft PR-7, as The Tribune reported on 19 May 2026. GMADA's alternate road from near Bawa White House is now partly open as well.
Is the alternate airport road in Mohali open?
Partly. The Tribune reported on 5 October 2026 that one side of the 4.5-km stretch from near Bawa White House in Phase XI to the airport flyover had opened to traffic, the other side was still under construction, and the street lights had not worked since it opened.
What is the PR-7 Spur?
It is a 10.3-km six-lane spur of the Ambala–Chandigarh greenfield highway (NH-205A) around Zirakpur. Its letter of award was issued on 27 March 2026 and the Prime Minister laid its foundation stone on 17 July 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau and The Tribune. It is not open.
How long is PR-7 Airport Road?
The Tribune described the Airport Road built by GMADA as a 17.5-km road linking the Mohali–Kharar and Zirakpur–Patiala highways (25 January 2018). An extension towards New Chandigarh was reported as 87% complete in May 2023; check its current status before relying on it.
Is there a shorter route to the airport from Chandigarh?
Not yet. A route from the Sector 47–48 junction in Chandigarh was listed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court for 16 July 2026, and Haryana's proposed 100-ft road needs Ministry of Defence approval, as reported by The Tribune in May 2026. We found no report that either has been approved.
How far is Zirakpur from Mohali airport?
About 13.7 km by the present route, according to The Tribune of 19 May 2026. Haryana's proposed road would make it about 9.6 km, but that road is not approved yet.
Does living near the airport road guarantee a better price later?
No, and we make no price predictions. What the road gives you is a shorter drive to the airport and to IT City. Check traffic at your hours, noise from the road and flight paths, and the project's own price and paperwork.
